Mindfulness is widely regarded as an effective practice, not just for reducing stress and boosting your mood, but also for taking control of your ambition and performance.

Mindfulness is widely regarded as an effective practice, not just for reducing stress and boosting your mood, but also for taking control of your ambition and performance.

Our human stress response is designed to be acute (you know, to help you run away from that tiger during the caveman days) not chronic, lingering with you day-in and day-out.

Are your levels are teetering on the latter? Try our top 7 tips to help you Chill and take control of that inner zen.

We know it can be a little intimidating actually getting taking steps to ‘chill’  – not to mention the challenge of finding time for yet one more thing in your super busy day. The great news is that developing consistent habits that encourage zen, organisation, and clarity of thought may be easier than you think…

Take Mindful Breaks:

Identify an opportunity in the midst of your day to pull your attention out of autopilot and back to the current moment. Start with just one and practice it daily for a week. Then, progressively build new opportunities, and one each week. Eventually, those mindfulness breaks will become second nature, and your days will be infused with mindfulness.

De-clutter that desk

Messy room = messy mind. If you’re a student, suffering from “Zoom fatigue” while working from home, or are simply working towards your ambitions, it’s important to keep your environment mess free. When we’re surrounded by mess, it affects our thoughts and mood.

There’s no need to jump straight into a drastic minimalistic approach and go full “KonMari”!

But establishing order into your environment can help clear the mind, and the best place to start is where the magic happens – your workspace.

Start small: add a plant or your favourite scented candle – create some ‘hygge' vibes*. Your ‘Mude’ ought to be a more Chill as you feel you can take control of your zen with a much more satisfying workspace. *hygge*

Exercise

Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and take control of that zen. Even without a gym membership, there are options available.

If you’re confined to your house, short on free time, or if the thought of exercising in public gives you the fear, there are plenty of fun routines to follow on YouTube – from bodyweight exercises to pilates, yoga, and more. Reaching a tipping point?

A short, 15-minute stroll in the fresh air is enough to lower levels of stress and fatigue, and really feel some chill vibes.

Get into those comfy clothes

Changing into something lounge-appropriate can set the ‘Mude' for chilling out and help you feel less tense. We often develop associations with our clothes. It might feel easy at the time, but kicking back on the sofa in your work clothes could be hampering your time to unwind.

Donning your fav pyjamas or lounge clothes can create an association with relaxation, and help define that switch from work mode to chill mode perfectly.

Listen to your favourite chill playlist

One of the best ways to relax and unwind is to listen to music. And, while it’s our differences that make people wonderful, it’s unlikely an up-tempo, intense playlist will help slow down your heart rate and help you relax.

Take your time finding soothing music that really speaks to you – it might be songs that remind you of peaceful times, tracks that help you connect to your emotions, some mellow instrumental tunes, or even ambient sounds.

It’s important to compile your own relaxing playlist so that no matter where you are, you’re always equipped with a soundtrack to chill.

Make yourself laugh

Watch a stand-up comedian you love on Netflix, send memes back and forth in your group chat, or meet up with your funniest friend if you can – if not, a video call is always a great way to catch up! As the legendary Charlie Chaplain said, “laughter is the tonic”. It helps you relax your body, lowers cortisol (a stress-inducing hormone), and increases endorphins.

For so many of us, days are so filled with tasks, deadlines and distractions that finding time for fun might seem impossible. But finding just a few minutes to take control of your zen can actually help you better focus and prioritise, as well as lifting your mood and giving you balance.
